Ray Holloway was nineteen the first time he crawled under a house in Ashby Creek. It was August. The crawlspace hit a hundred degrees, and the job was supposed to take an hour. It took six. He charged for one.
That customer still calls him.
He learned the trade from his father, who fixed things for neighbors on weekends and never once left a mess behind. His father taught him to wipe the faucet dry after every repair. Nobody notices. Ray still does it. So does everyone who works for him.
In 1995 Ray bought a used van, painted his name on the door and put his number in the paper. The van has company now. Four trucks leave the yard at 7:30 every weekday morning. The rules rode in with the first one.
